Fig Leaves (1926)

Olive Borden Fig Leaves

In 1926 Olive starred in the silent comedy Fig Leaves. She plays Eve, an unhappy housewife who defies her husband to become a model. Her real life boyfriend George O'Brien was cast as Adam, the controlling husband. Phyllis Haver plays their beautiful neighbor who attempts to seduce Adam. Fig Leaves was written and directed by Howard Hawks. The film, which takes place in the 1920s, includes flashback scenes to the Garden Of Eden where Olive portrays the original Eve. Her lavish costumes, designed by Gilbert Adrian, cost more than fifty thousand dollars. The original movie had a fashion show filmed in Technicolor but this scene has been lost. Fig Leaves was a major box office hit and Olive got rave reviews for her performance. She would later say that she loved playing Eve. The film was screened in 2018 at the Museum Of Modern Art.
